KAURI’S FANTASTIC FISHING TRIP
On Monday, Kauri class went to The Groynes to release our babies and to catch their older relatives.
To explain: In Term 2, Peter from Fish and Game brought about 40 salmon eggs into class and taught us about their life cycle. Peter also came to school and taught Kauri how to tie knots for hooks and how to cast a line. We were amazing!
We looked after the eggs and fed the young salmon as they grew. Because we are awesome, about 30 survived.
After we released ‘our babies’, we spent the next 90 minutes fishing. In total, we caught 15 salmon to take home to eat and 2 salmon that we released. We also enjoyed watching the fish getting gutted by Peter, Emma and Neil. A huge thank you must go out to the parents and grandparents who came along and made the trip possible. Every student now has a fishing licence. Need more? Just ask.
Here are some pictures of the day. There will be some writing and photos on the learning blogs soon.

We have also been learning about metaphors this week. Here is a metaphor poem that we wrote as a class about our class. Enjoy.
METAPHOR POETRY
LEARN: Metaphor – compares two things but does not use the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
CREATE:
KAURI CLASS
Kauri is a fire
Burning with great learning
Kauri is a herd of elephants
Charging into the class
Kauri is a Mastermind
Moving things with their brains
Kauri is a thunderstorm
Yelling everywhere we go
Kauri is a bunny
Caring for others
Kauri is a snail
Moving so slowly down to the mat
Kauri is a kangaroo
Bouncing with ideas
Get to know us because we are awesome

Kauri have been learning to use similes in their writing. A simile compares two things using 'like' or 'as'. Here is the simile poem about our class. As you can tell, we have a sense of humour.
Kauri is as ….
Quick as a sloth
Slow as a tortoise
Large as a fully grown rhino
Happy as a maniac
Nice as Santa
Weak as a pencil
Strong as a baby
Loud as a room filled with elephants
Quiet as a thunderstorm
Brave as a soldier
Wild as a tiger
Lazy as a cat in the sun
Busy as a rat
Put it all together and you’ve got Kauri class!

People who have changed the world.
Kauri have been LEARNING about people who they admire and who have changed the world. They have then CREATED treasure chests and artifacts that could have belonged to that person.
Using green screen, the class are filming and posting interviews with their HERO. Here is 'Steve Irwin' being interviewed as an example.
Look forward to Kauri SHARING their interviews on their blogs over the next week.

Cool shared writing from the STORY TELLERS
Getting Started Story
Once upon a time there was a robot called Frank and a giant
(Describe character) Frank - metal, round, shiny Giant - covered in hair, can change body size
Who lived in a spooky house in the forest
(Describe setting) Spiders all over it. Dust everywhere. Vines and spiderwebs everywhere.
One day a man came to the house to rob the house
(Something happened to start the story) Robber steals a couple of rats, jewellery and robots spare parts.
And so they try and catch the robber but he is too fast.
(What does the character do next? Why?) The robot and giant make a trap covered with leaves to catch the robber.
However the giant tries to catch him with his hands and makes a big bang on the ground.
(Something goes wrong) Which causes an earthquake and splits the earth in half, into a chasm of death.
Then the giant steps on the trap and is caught.
(How does the character try to solve the problem?)
Eventually Frank the robot saves the giant
(Do they succeed? Why?)
In the end the robber was caught by Frank
(Bring your story to an end)
Once upon a time there was a round, shiny robot called Frank and a giant who could change his body size. They lived in a spooky house covered in spider webs and creepy crawlies. Rats the size of cats walked everywhere.
One day a man came to their house to rob them because he needed rats, jewellery and robot parts. And so they tried to catch the robber by making a trap and covering it with leaves. Sadly, the robber was too fast. However, the giant tried to catch him with his hands and made a big bang on the ground. The bang was so powerful that it made a chasm that split the house in half.

Kauri Cooking, Term 1
Bon appetit, Kauri
At class meeting, Kauri decided that they wanted to do some cooking. Each University group then had a series of meetings. They decided what would be on their menus, what they needed to bring and who would bring what.
As you can see, the results were spectacular - and delicious.

KITCHEN CHEMISTRY
Kauri have been exploring what happens when kitchen chemicals are mixed together.
ACIDS, BASES and RED CABBAGE WATER: Here are some photos showing what happens when red cabbage water is mixed with: baking soda, sprite, vinegar, cordial, toothpaste and human spit (theirs). We then organised the results from strongest acid to strongest base.

Kauri are learning to write a recount using paragraphs and detail to make it interesting for the reader. Here is a recount that we wrote as a class. Wait until you read our camp recounts. they will be outstanding.
Kauri Go to Beach Education
Two weeks ago, Kauri and Rimu were on the bus going to South Brighton beach to learn about rips, beach safety, to be sun smart and to have fun.
When we got to the surf lifesaving club, we were met by Leah, Harry and Cam, young lifeguards who were full of energy. We learned about lots of things about the beach in a humorous way. Brayden nearly drowned inside but got saved by Shukoor.
After that we went down to the beach to play games and swim. The game we played was seagulls and trashcans. The lifeguards got us to make a rip in the sand. The first couple got washed away but then it worked. We learned how to wade into the water, duck dive and body surf. The water drift was very strong.
At the end we had a lot of fun but we were also cold, wet and tired.

As part of our writing, Kauri wrote a ‘We Are ….’ poem about the class. (Mr M would just like to say that he is not really crazy at all)
WE ARE KAURI
WE ARE: Enthusiastic Super heroes
We wonder if we will age as well as Mr M
We hear noisy children and happy voices
We see pixel art and our work
We want a pet rat for company instead of handwriting
WE ARE: Enthusiastic Super heroes.
We pretend to drive imaginary cars in the classroom
We feel happy for the year in front of us
We touch the walls because they are interesting
We worry about earthquakes and Mr M’s moustache
We feel sad when someone teases us
WE ARE: Enthusiastic Super heroes.
We understand that Mr M is a bit crazy
We say “Yay!” when we go on a field trip and camp
We dream of a good class and hot milo
We try to persuade Mr M to give us gumballs
We hope our university will win and for the world to be a better place
WE ARE: Enthusiastic Super heroes
Kauri get rescued in the pool
