KAURI’S FANTASTIC FISHING TRIP

On Monday, Kauri class went to The Groynes to release our babies and to catch their older relatives.

To explain: In Term 2, Peter from Fish and Game brought about 40 salmon eggs into class and taught us about their life cycle. Peter also came to school and taught Kauri how to tie knots for hooks and how to cast a line. We were amazing!

We looked after the eggs and fed the young salmon as they grew. Because we are awesome, about 30 survived.

After we released ‘our babies’, we spent the next 90 minutes fishing. In total, we caught 15 salmon to take home to eat and 2 salmon that we released. We also enjoyed watching the fish getting gutted by Peter, Emma and Neil. A huge thank you must go out to the parents and grandparents who came along and made the trip possible. Every student now has a fishing licence. Need more? Just ask.

Here are some pictures of the day. There will be some writing and photos on the learning blogs soon.

We have also been learning about metaphors this week. Here is a metaphor poem that we wrote as a class about our class. Enjoy.

METAPHOR POETRY

LEARN: Metaphor – compares two things but does not use the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

KAURI CLASS

Kauri is a fire
Burning with great learning

Kauri is a herd of elephants
Charging into the class

Kauri is a Mastermind
Moving things with their brains

Kauri is a thunderstorm
Yelling everywhere we go

Kauri is a bunny
Caring for others

Kauri is a snail
Moving so slowly down to the mat

Kauri is a kangaroo
Bouncing with ideas

Get to know us because we are awesome

Kauri have been learning to use similes in their writing. A simile compares two things using 'like' or 'as'. Here is the simile poem about our class. As you can tell, we have a sense of humour.

Kauri is as ….
Quick as a sloth
Slow as a tortoise
Large as a fully grown rhino
Happy as a maniac
Nice as Santa
Weak as a pencil
Strong as a baby
Loud as a room filled with elephants
Quiet as a thunderstorm
Brave as a soldier
Wild as a tiger
Lazy as a cat in the sun
Busy as a rat
Put it all together and you’ve got Kauri class!
